Introductions

The world got a bit smaller this week, and my part in it got smaller
as well. What I am talking about is the discovery of the Unicycle home
page on the Web, made a few days ago by a friend of mine. Until then, me
and my 40-something person uni club knew nothing about the existance of
the rest of the world of unicycling, and accordingly, we thought that we
were hot shit.
I am this year's president of the Gonzo Unicycle Madness club at Harvey
Mudd College in the outskirts of Los Angeles County. Unicycling has been
pretty big here for about 18 years, but none of us have ever done much
looking around for other unics on the net or anyplace else.
What is Gonzo Unicycle Madness? Well, officially we are a club of about 40,
that includes anyone at Harvey Mudd College who either knows how to ride a
unicycle, or has made the casual comment that he/she would like to learn how.
But, unofficially we are a group of students who ride our wheels everyday,
everywhere, and all the time. Several times a week we play our version of
Unicycle hockey (which evolved a bit differently from the international rules
that I read yesterday), we play basketball every few months, and the rest of
the time we do a few other things that seem a bit bizarre (even on a unicycle)
. About 25 of us ride well enough for transportation, and about a dozen of us
ride well enough to rank a 3 or 4. All of us ride 24" wheels, mostly schwinns,
but lately we have been buying Zefar Cycle Designs to fill the void left by
Schwinn.
So the purpose of this post is to introduce my club to the rest of the
unicycling world. If any of you are even close to California, please send
me personal mail, so that we can get to know ya. I read the list of Unicycle
Hockey Teams on the home page, and it mentioned one team in Glendora, Cal.,
but the phone number given is "no longer in service." If anyone has
information about this, please send it to me. Until then, I will continue
to read this mailing list to see if there is anything going on in this area.
Thanks for reading this far. :-)
