the Unicycling Society of America. You will need to belong to the USA
in order to participate in the meet, so I recommend that you join now
to keep up-to-date on meet plans.
If you have never been to the NUC you should go if at all possible.
You will see all sorts of new tricks, learn lots of new things, and
meet other unicyclists.
Highlights
* This year's NUC has been expanded to a 4 day event.
* Opening Ceremony: 9:00 am, Thursday, July 27. Fun races and
workshops throughout Thursday morning. Point races begin Thursday
afternoon (1:00 pm). Racing events continue through Friday, with
artistic competition scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
* First evening picnic in the city park, including a pool party and
unicycle basketball and hockey.
* Unicycle-swim-run triathlon.
* Final evening awards banquet.
* Optional day trip to Cedar Point Amusement Park on Lake Erie.
Regular Admission is $26.95; Junior (under 4' tall) is $ 4.95.
Tickets may be purchased at the gate. Those planning the trip are
responsible for their own transportation.

MEALS
Available at Bowling Green State University Thursday through Sunday.
$16 per day for three meals (Friday & Saturday). $9.50 per day for two
meals (Thursday & Sunday). All campus meals must be arranged via
advanced registration (i.e., before June 1). No refunds on unused
tickets. Note: Dinner will not be provided as part of the campus meal
plan on Thursday and Sunday evening since these are the nights of the
picnic and banquet.
Artistic Events
ARTISTIC AGE GROUPS (FOR STANDARD, FREESTYLE, AND PAIRS COMPETITION)
0-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49,
50-Up, Junior Expert, EXPERT. Junior Expert is open to all riders aged
0-14. EXPERT is open to riders of any age, including 0-14.
ARTISTIC TIME LIMITS
Individual Standard Skill
3 minutes maximum (all ages).
Individual Freestyle
2 minutes maximum for riders 0-14 (except junior expert); 3
minutes maximum for all other riders, including junior expert.
Pairs Freestyle
2 minutes maximum for riders 0-14 (except junior expert); 3
minutes maximum for all other riders, including junior expert.
The age of the older rider determines the age group for the
pair. Junior Expert is "older" than 50-Up and EXPERT is the
"oldest" age category.
Group Freestyle
3 minutes maximum with a minimum of 3 riders. Each rider may
enter only one freestyle group, and each club may enter only
one group in this category.
Club Show
6 minutes maximum with a minimum of 5 riders. Riders must be
members of a unicycle club that is registered with the
Unicycling Society of America, Inc.
Parade
5 minutes maximum with a minimum of 5 riders. Individual riders
may enter only one parade group, and each club may enter only
one group in this category.
An Overall Artistic Champion will be declared in each age group. The
champion will be determined by the combined placing points in the
individual freestyle and pairs competition. A rider who competes in
individual freestyle in one age group and pairs freestyle in a
different age group will have their placing points returned to the
younger of the two age groups for determination of their placement in
the overall artistic standings. For example, a rider who competes as
an EXPERT in individual freestyle, and in the 17-18 age group for
pairs freestyle, will have their individual and pairs placing points
totaled in the 17-18 age group and will be eligible for the overall
artistic award in the 17-18 category. This rider would not be eligible
for the overall artistic award in the EXPERT category, however, since
placing points cannot be moved from a younger to an older age
category. In the event of a tie for the overall artistic award in an
age group, the individual freestyle competition placing will be used
as the tie breaker.
Riders may participate in both the individual freestyle and standard
competition, but the standard results will have no bearing on the
overall artistic award.
Male and female winners in the EXPERT categories of standard skill,
individual freestyle, pairs freestyle, and overall artistic are the
respective National Champions. The male and female winners in the
junior expert category are the Junior National Champions. First place
finishers in Group, Club, and Parade are National Champions.
Important note: No metal pedals will be allowed in the gymnasiums.
Riders attempting to participate in the artistic competition with
metal pedals will be disqualified.
Racing
RACING AGE GROUPS
0-6 (16" wheel), 0-8 (20" wheel), 9-10 (20" wheel), 0-12 (24" wheel),
13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-Up. Maximum wheel size
for racing is 24". The 0-8 (20" wheel) and 0-12 (24" wheel) categories
are designed for riders who may be young enough for smaller wheel
sizes but either do not have them or do not wish to use them. The age
group a rider chooses for racing may be different than the age group
s/he chooses for artistic competition (e.g., while you must race in
your age group, you may choose to compete as an EXPERT in the artistic
competition).
The same wheel size must be used for all racing events, including the
board races and obstacle course.
Minimum crank arm length: For 24' wheel, crank arms may be no shorter
than 5" (127 mm). For 20" and 16" wheels, crank arms may be no shorter
than 4.5" (114 mm). These are the minimum allowable lengths measured
from the center of the wheel axle to the center of the pedal axle.
Longer crank arms may be used.
Kneepads and gloves are mandatory for all races racing events.
No tents are permitted on the track infield.
Point races include the following: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m (ages 0-10
only), 1600m (ages 11-Up), 50m one-foot, 50m fast backward, 10m wheel
walk (ages 0-10 only), 30m wheel walk (ages 11-Up), 10m slow forward,
10m slow backward, and obstacle course. Riders can compete in only one
of the backward riding events. Placement in each of the point races
will earn individual and team points toward the determination of the
racing championship awards. In each event, riders will receive 8
points for 1st place, 6 points for 2nd place, 4 points for 3rd place,
2 points for 4th place, and 1 point for 5th place. If two or more
riders tie in a race, they each will receive full points for the
placing.
For most races (see exceptions below), a final EXPERT heat composed of
the top 9 finishers across all age groups will be run. The winner of
this heat will be the National Champion for the race in question.
There will be no final EXPERT heat for the 1600m, 800m, slow forward,
slow backward, and obstacle course; rather, the riders with the best
times in these races, across all age categories, will be declared
National Champions. The male and female riders who accumulate the most
EXPERT racing points will be the two overall National Racing
Champions.
Racing Teams: Clubs or groups of riders can register as teams. Teams
may consist of any number of riders, male and female mixed. Ten or
more riders will produce the best results. Riders' points may count
for only one team. The total racing points accumulated by the 10
highest scoring riders from each team will be the team score. The team
with the most points is the National Champion Racing Team.
Vendors who intend to sell merchandise on the university campus should
note that state law requires that you obtain a Vendor's License ($50).
